Matisse Blue Sand and Copper Scroll Earrings
These Matisse vintage copper earrings are both beautiful and rare! The blue glass frit on this pair was deliberately under-fired in the kiln, to produce a delightful sandy texture. According to Matthew Burkholz, co-author of Copper Art Jewelry: A Different Lustre, these sandy designs were seasonal, and were meant to evoke surf, sun and sand. They are rare today because the under-fired glass was less durable than fully-fired enamelwork.
Each earring is 1-1/8" in length; each is signed (c) Matisse on each paddle. There is a minor, age-appropriate patina on the copper portion of the earrings.
